Led by artists Khushboo and Christie Swallow, facilitated by curator Gina DeCagna
This event will launch discussion around maps as palimpsests – in which borders, territories, ownership, dispossession, and other factors that may be opaque through different sociopolitical power structures come under critical and artistic dialogue for revision and remaking.
Our current exhibition showcases works by artists Khushboo and Christie Swallow, who will be on hand to discuss their pieces and will each share more about what motivates their practices – converging and diverging around techniques of counter-mapping from historical precedents as well as the influences of personal memory, notions of home, and cultural tales around land struggles.
We will read extracts from:
New Directions in Radical Cartography: Why the Map is Never the Territory, Edited by Phil Cohen and Mike Duggan
The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis by Amitav Ghosh
Following this initial event, we intend to launch an ongoing critical reading series on maps as palimpsests that will be held online, so participants can connect from anywhere in the world. Write to us at palimpsestprojects@gmail.com if you are interested in participating in the ongoing series or contributing to our selection of readings.
