Storied Walk 1: Richmond Green

  • The Green Richmond, England, TW9 1LX United Kingdom (map)

Join Palimpsest Projects this winter as we continue our series of free, open-participation ‘Storied Walks’ at Richmond Green – building upon last season’s vibrant exhibition and events at the adjacent One Paved Court Gallery.

With gratitude to Richmond Council's Civic Pride Fund, all participants of the public are warmly welcomed to explore techniques of 'deep mapping' while ambling together through the Green during this slower and more frosted season. We'll be critically examining the layers of history, memory and experience that coalesce in this unique place of English heritage, guided by art researcher Alice-Anne Psaltis.

The artistic research method of deep mapping is something that anyone can apply whilst walking – allowing you to express your lived experiences, stories, memories and senses as you perceive this civic space.

Meeting Location on the Green: Drinking Fountain at the South Corner (across from The Cricketers and The Prince's Head)

Preparation

We encourage participants to bring a simple notebook for recording observations, sketches and map-making during the walk. You may also choose to take photos and sound recordings, such as from a smartphone.

Due to winter temperatures and weather, we encourage all participants to wear very warm clothes, such as gloves and hats, as well as comfortable walking shoes. Should you have any accessibility concerns, please let us know in advance by writing to palimpsestprojects@gmail.com.

Lead Facilitator

Alice-Anne Psaltis is a researcher and educator interested in image politics, memory work and walking practices. She holds an MA in Art and Politics from Goldsmiths, University of London and has worked as an educator at Whitechapel Gallery, London South Bank University, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art and the University of Queensland Art Museum.

Facilitator

Gina DeCagna is the founder and director of Palimpsest Projects. She recently curated This Language Rematerialised (25 September – 20 October 2024) at One Paved Court to launch Palimpsest's inaugural artistic activities, in which 8 contemporary artists showcased how they intervene in cultural narratives and carve out their own paths. An artist as well as a writer interested in ways to undo hyper-capitalistic logic, she completed her MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Further Information

Just as the concept of palimpsest may explore ways of undoing particular power structures – which could have histories of excluding, erasing and silencing – we are especially interested in how participants may wish to express their creativity and voices against the historic dominant narratives of a place. We encourage overlooked voices, perspectives and forms of knowledge to come into our forefront from any previously obscured or hindered positioning.

We are grateful to the Civic Pride Fund of Richmond Council.
